As the spring semester wraps up, Sinclair College’s music department has scheduled five final musical performances. Starting on April 24, Sinclair’sJazz Ensemble and Youth Jazz Ensemble, along with guest Matt Anklan and director Bill Burns, will perform at Blair Hall Theatre in Building 2.
The last week of April sees the Sinclair Concert Band, Northwestern High School Symphonic Band and Tri-County North Concert Band perform on April 27, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Blair Hall Theatre.
The Sinclair Wind Symphony will follow two days later on April 29. Stiver’s School for the Arts Wind Ensemble and the Sinclair Symphonic Chorale perform on May 1, at Hawker United Church of Christ in Beavercreek. Graduating students’ capstone performances are from 6-8 p.m. on May 4, and Sinclair Classical Guitar Ensemble on May 6, at 7:00 p.m.
More information about the upcoming performances can be found on the Sinclair website.
Michael Berning, a lead conductor and the director of Sinclair’s Music Department, is excited about the Spring performances after a rough winter. The Wind Symphony was 1 of 5 Ohio bands to be selected to perform at the elite OMEA Competition Conference in Columbus, Ohio in January, with new composers and brand new music.
Unfortunately, most of the group came home with Covid-19, and February’s concerts were cancelled due to snow and illness.
Berning says they are much more prepared now, and with more than 100 local highschool band students joining this season’s concerts, they are expecting a good audience turnout.

“It’s exciting to have the highschool bands play with us. It’s nice for students and parents to see what Sinclair looks like, and what it has to offer,” he said.
It’s been a busy semester with local high school music students from Dayton Public Schools and more around the Dayton area.
“After Covid, we had very little interest in our music ensembles, especially in the choirs,” Berning said.
He noted that general community members are welcome to join the chorale and select instrumental ensembles, and that the choir’s rehearsal times will be changing next Fall to Tuesday evenings to be more accommodating to work schedules.
Sinclair’s music program offers degrees that easily transfer to university parallel programs. The music program is perfect for those interested in music education or music therapy, performing or working in the music industry. Auditions for music scholarships are offered at the end of each Spring.
According to their website, Sinclair’s music program has a tri-goal approach:
“To create an environment that fosters an appreciation of the musical heritage of humankind; To provide leadership for cultural development of students and community members; and to provide music ensemble opportunities for students, music educators, and professional musicians to perform together, sharing skills, for the benefit of the campus and the entire community.”
Berning spoke highly of Sinclair’s music department and the capabilities of its constituents.
“Sinclair is our area’s best-kept musical secret, but we’re trying to get the word out,” he said.
