On April 24, two bands will be coming to share traditional Appalachian music at the Sinclair Centerville campus.
The first band is the Jericho Old Time Band, a group of musicians who enjoy performing and sharing the fun and variety of old time music.
Their music includes fiddle tunes, early country vocal duets, lonesome ballads, mountain dulcimer, various banjo styles and more in an eclectic mix of American roots music.
The second band is Ma Crow & Co, a bluegrass and mountain music band from Cincinnati. Their music includes ballads, bluegrass, mountain harmonies and more. The leader, Ma Crow, is an award winning acoustic artist, and every member brings decades of professional experience to create a unique mixture of excellent instrumentation and vocals.
In addition to hosting Appalachian music, Sinclair also has a program for Appalachian Outreach and offers a certificate in Appalachian Studies. There is also an Appalachian exhibit in Building 11 at the Dayton campus, starting on April 20.
Heidi Arnold, the professor in charge of the Appalachian programs, encouraged people to visit the exhibit and to educate themselves about Appalachian culture and history.
While Appalachian people might seem like a small and obscure population, Arnold explained that many people have Appalachian roots without knowing it.
To many it might seem like it does not matter, but Arnold stated that it can provide people with information about their background that explains why they believe and behave in certain ways, as well as greater insight into many of our friends, neighbors and coworkers.
“We may think Appalachian ways only take place in the hills and valleys of the mountains, but those ways have moved to the city and to our organizations. As we believe at Sinclair, knowledge helps us understand the world and be a better civically minded community,” Arnold said.
