The beginning of a new semester is a great time to take the initiative and meet new people one way of doing that is attending and participating in some of the many events on campus.
There’s a lot going on in September and checking out at least one of the following upcoming events will help get your semester off to a good start.
Pet Rock Parties
For those wanting to mingle with other students while getting creative, the Pet Rock Parties will have you covered. Participants will be able to bring their imaginations to life and craft their very own pet rock to take home.
It can be anything from a cat to a dragon to something else entirely, and attendees will get to name their new buddies while potentially also meeting new friends along the way. The event will also feature free popcorn.
The first Pet Rock Party will be on Sept. 8 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and it will be held in the Cafe at the Centerville campus.
The second Pet Rock Party will be on Sept.10 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., in the NW Loggia at the Dayton campus.
The third and final Pet Rock Party will be on Sept. 14 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the CVB Community Room at the Mason campus.
Sinclair College Theatre presents Exit the King
Exit the King is an absurdist drama about King Berenger and his struggle with coming to terms with his mortality and the loss of his position and power.
These performances bring a dark and timeless tale to life while exploring themes that continue to resonate with modern audiences. The production hopes to encourage everyone to vote and let their voice be heard, and to focus on how to shape a better future rather than lament the dysfunctional present.
Those who enjoy theatre or want to see what their Sinclair peers can do, won’t want to miss this.
Tickets are free, but seating is first come first served. The first two performances will be on Sept. 9 and 10 from 1-2:30 p.m., hosted at the Dayton campus in the Black Box Theatre of Building 2. The final performance will be in the same location on Sept. 11 from 7-8:30 p.m.
Article Club discussions
For those looking to discuss more serious topics or learn something new about important issues, the Article Club Discussions are a great choice to consider.
The first discussion will be on Sept. 16 from noon to 1 p.m., and will be about the history and impact of the Rosenwald Schools, which were constructed to help Black children during the days of segregation but were largely abandoned after the end of segregation.
The second discussion will be on Sept. 24 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and will be about rethinking monuments, specifically in relation to Confederate statues and the question of what should come down and what should go up to replace them. Both events are on Zoom and are free to attend but require registration ahead of time.
Connection through creativity
For students who enjoy crafting things alongside others the Dayton campus has quite a few events throughout September that fit the bill. One is the Creation Station event that is happening in the Library Sept. 14-18, which will give students the chance to add color to a large tablecloth mural. Students are free to stop in anytime they can while the Library is open.
Another is Connecting Stitchers for those who enjoy stitching, knitting, crocheting or any kind of creation with needles, and who are looking to meet others who have similar hobbies. This event is on Sept. 16 from noon to 1 p.m. and will be at the NW Loggia.
Giving back to the community
While most of the events going on in September at the Sinclair campuses are focused on student learning and socializing, there are also a few that focus on giving back to the community.
One is the blood drive happening at the Mason campus outside of Building A, which will be on Sept. 2 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Another is the Breast Cancer Awareness event happening at the Dayton campus in NW Loggia, which will feature a Pink Ribbon Table honoring those impacted by breast cancer, as well as giving students a chance to test their knowledge with a Myth or Fact Spin Wheel. The Pink Ribbon Table is on Sept. 29 and will last from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m..
