Journalism will be taking center stage in downtown Dayton this month as The Journalism Lab brings its first Dayton Journalism Summit to the Dayton Metro Library.
The free two-day event on Jan. 22-23, will offer workshops and panel discussions directed at educating and engaging with the public in the practice and execution of journalism. No prior journalism experience is required to attend, making the summit accessible to anyone interested in learning more about the media. People planning on attending should register quick as spots for the workshops are limited.
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of journalism formats, including news writing, photojournalism, audio storytelling and media literacy. Sessions are organized for both novices and experts, with an importance on real-world insight and learning practical skills.
The panel discussions will focus on the current state of journalism and some challenges the local newsrooms are facing, how to better incorporate community and more.
Organizers hope these panels and conversations will help participants better understand the role journalism plays in shaping the informed communities around.
The Dayton Metro Library, as the host, reflects the Journalism Lab’s commitment to community access and public learning. The central location allows residents across the region to take part. The summit is open to students, aspiring journalists or anyone interested in how news is created or how writing comes to be.
