YourVoice: Students weigh in on campus parking

Throughout the academic year, parking is available for all students at the downtown campus. There are often mixed opinions about the limit of parking spaces coming from students who commute daily.

While some students appreciate parking close to campus, others are frustrated by how crowded the lots become and the parking habits of their classmates. Several students at Sinclair share their opinions on campus parking while also mentioning parking pet peeves.

Noah Schlarman

To Schlarman, parking is either accessible or it is not.

“Over the summer, it actually got better even when they were doing construction because they opened the fourth level again,” Schlarman said. During the spring semester, when the 4^th level was still closed, Schlarman recalls spending more time looking for a spot.

Now that the 4^th level is open for parking, Schlarman has an easier time finding a lot. Since he has classes in the morning, he feels that the parking lot is less busy. “Having more capacity makes it more accessible,” Schlarmna said.

Steve

“I haven’t had any issues. It is an easy process,” Steve said regarding parking. Steve is satisfied with parking at Sinclair Campus. He has faced no issues getting in or out of the lot, though he mentions the busiest moments depend on which time of day you are parking.

He has found that a few students will not fully pull into the lots and park over the lines. “The parking here is adequate,” Steve said.

Jacie Moore

There have been times when Moore has had to email her professors about running late, even when she left early in anticipation. She explained that the parking would often get hectic during the first week of the fall semester when everyone is still finding their way around and many students are on campus.

“I think it is not as good as it could be,” Moore said.

Students who parked outside designated spaces or failed to pull fully into a spot were among her biggest frustrations with campus parking, this lead to some spots not being as accessible.

“Plan ahead,” Moore said.

While students have different experiences with parking at Sinclair, factors such as class times, available spaces and the beginning-of-semester rush can affect how easy it is to find a spot. With the fourth level reopened, some students have noticed improvements, while others still see room for change. For students commuting to campus, planning ahead and allowing extra time can help make the parking process easier.
