Sanja Keller, New Dean for Health Sciences. THE CLARION

Sanja Keller started as a wide-eyed Sinclair College student unsure which healthcare path to take. Today, she is the Dean of Health Sciences, one of the college’s most vital divisions; leading students, shaping futures and proving that sometimes the best journeys take you right back home.

“I was fresh out of high school and I knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but I didn’t know exactly where I fit,” Keller said.

After weighing her options between nursing and respiratory care, she noticed that nursing had a two-year waiting list while respiratory care had just one.

“I thought, ‘why wait two years when I can start now?’” Keller said.

That practical decision set her on a path that would define her life. Sanja began the respiratory care program in 1994 and graduated in 1996.

Her 30-year career in respiratory care took her through acute and critical care, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, stress testing and patient education.

“I discovered that I really enjoyed working with patients who have breathing issues,” she said, “It’s challenging, yes, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.”

By 2006, her career started leaning toward education. In 2008, she returned to Sinclair as a clinical instructor, teaching students in hospital settings and later leading labs in the same classrooms where she had once sat.

“It was surreal to be back here, but this time as the teacher,” Keller said.

That experience solidified her love for mentoring students and nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Her teaching and leadership journey continued. She became the program director and chair of the respiratory care program in 2016, and in August 2024, she assumed the role of dean of health sciences.

“If you count my time as a student, I’ve been part of Sinclair for over 30 years,” Keller said, “But officially as faculty and administration, it’s been 17 years.”

Sanja’s leadership style is deeply personal, shaped by her own experiences as a student.

“I’ve been in your seat. I know how hard it is. Persistence pays off, and you can do this,” Keller said.

Her empathy extends to students navigating waitlists, particularly international students who travel far to study at Sinclair

“I completely understand,” she said, “You come here with a plan and a budget, and suddenly there’s a wait. It’s frustrating. We’re constantly looking for ways to make that better.”

Support is a key part of her philosophy, both for students and faculty.

“Support is everything. Even as a dean, I’m surrounded by people like Brenda Dickson and Dr. Rena Sebor who make sure we can do our jobs well. Students need that same kind of support to succeed,” Keller said.

Sanja is committed to maintaining Sinclair’s culture of inclusivity and excellence.

“We have students from all walks of life, from every corner of the world. My goal is to make sure everyone feels welcome and knows they have what they need to succeed,” Keller said.

Her vision goes beyond maintaining standards; she wants to foster growth, encourage feedback and implement new initiatives that respond to community and healthcare needs.

Her love for student success is contagious. “Watching students graduate and step confidently into their healthcare careers is the most exciting part of my job,” she says. It is a reminder that her work is not just administrative; it is about shaping lives and futures.

Her advice to aspiring healthcare professionals reflects both pragmatism and compassion.

“You are entering a sacred field,” she said, “You will take care of people in their most vulnerable moments, in times of illness, wellness and sometimes at the end of life. Always put patients first. Lead with empathy, understanding and competence.”

Keller stresses persistence above all else.

“Never give up,” she said, “Even when it’s hard, keep going. The challenges are part of the journey, but the rewards are incredible.”

Sanja Keller’s story is a testament to resilience, dedication and the power of coming full circle.

From student to educator to dean, she continues to inspire students, faculty and staff alike. Her journey proves that with passion, persistence and a heart for service, the best paths can lead you right back to where it all began.
