The Clarion

Produced by Students, For Students

Summer has come around Sinclair Community College once more. The campus has quieted down from the hustle and bustle from the usual semester. This relaxed environment is a perfect opportunity to watch some films.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Lilo and Stitch (2002). Disney

Lilo is a troubled child, Stitch is an extraterrestrial creature designed for destruction. They must contend with forces attempting to take their family apart while learning the meaning of “ohana”.

This story is told with a backdrop of the beautiful land of Hawaii rendered in wonderful watercolors. This style makes the movie seem like watching a storybook. Combine this with a score that makes heavy use of Elvis Presley and the film has a timeless tone that’s perfect for chilling out to.

Weekend at Bernie’s

Weekend at Bernies. Amazon MGM

Everyone dreads meeting with their boss but Larry and Richard might have the worst story, their boss is dead. Weekend at Bernie’s is a black comedy film released in 1989. When two financial employees are called up for a meeting with their boss in his mansion, they find him dead.

Believing themselves to be wrapped up in the conspiracy that killed him and not wanting to be implicated in his murder the two must puppeteer his body and convince people that Bernie is still alive. This includes the hitman who killed him who believes him to still be alive and continuously attempts to finish the job, slowly descending into madness.

The Mask

The Mask. Warner Bros.

Stanley Ipkiss is a downtrodden bank teller. He is overlooked by everyone around him. Until one day he finally gets his lucky break. After finding a mysterious mask in the ocean, he gains the power to become a carton character in real life and do every he always wanted to.

This film is a classic of so many peoples childhoods. This is due in no small part to Jim Carrey. The role of a man who acts like a cartoon is so perfectly fitted to Carreys style of comedy that it might have been made for him. This is combined with a funny if unsubtle form of comedy makes a film that has viewers laughing at every unexpected bit that plays.

The Goonies

The Goonies. Warner Bros.

One of Steven Spielberg’s most famous, recognizable and quotable films. A group of friends must venture to find hidden pirate treasure to prevent their small town from being turned into a golf course. During this adventure every part of the film is exactly what one wants from it. The kids are rambunctious and funny, the villains are intimidating and the bullies actually try to murder someone.

The Karate Kid (1984)

The Karate Kid. Sony Pictures

This film follows Daniel LaRusso after he moves to a new town in California. The move is rough for LaRusso, he has no friends and even gets beaten up by bullies from his local high school. This leads him to meet Mr. Miyagi who teaches LaRusso the art of Karate through very unconventional methods.

This story is one of personal growth and maturing, not only as a fighter but as a person as well. Any readers that have an interest in the martial arts should watch this movie, it perfectly encapsulates the journey that is growing and improving oneself.

Be sure to take a break this summer and avoid the heat with a movie binge in a nice air conditioned room.
