In the “Dayton Braces for NATO” article of the The Clarion’s April print edition it was stated that President Donald Trump was expected to attend the upcoming NATO assembly. It should have said that Donald J Trump was invited to participate in the assembly according to Jason Galanes, chief of staff for Congressman Mike Turner, R-District 10.
On May 21-27, NATO will be holding their Parliamentary Assembly at the Benjamin & Miriam Schuster Performing Arts Center on Second Street in Dayton. This will restrict a large portion of the downtown area. Fortunately for many, Montgomery County’s Representative Mike Turner made a point to set this meeting during Memorial day weekend, minimizing the hustle that is the traffic surrounding NATO village.
This event will be welcoming over 300 parliamentarians of the 32 different countries that make up this organization. The last time NATO gathered in Dayton was to sign the 1995 Dayton Accords, which put an end to the Bosnian war.
Now 30 years later they will gather under quite different circumstances. Last years assembly sparked riots across the previous host city of Montreal. Dayton has prepared for potential protests by creating the NATO Exclusion Zone which blocks traffic, and will close sidewalks and parks located within this restricted area.
