Apr 13, 2026 #Earth Month

April is Earth Month, and the Dayton area has no shortage of events for people looking to make a difference, connect with others and take steps toward a more sustainable world.

Bicycle Maintenance 1

Choosing to bike instead of drive contributes to cleaner air, as well as reducing fuel costs and noise pollution. Possum Creek MetroPark will host a hands-on bicycle maintenance class on April 14 from 6-8:30 p.m., designed to help participants learn how to diagnose and fix common bike problems, including flat tires and chain issues.

Regularly biking and learning to fix one’s own bike can have positive effects to personal health and the environment. CYCLEPLAN

The class costs $12 for those ages 14 and older, and participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a useful opportunity for anyone who rides regularly and wants to become more independent when it comes to bike repairs.

Backyard Habitat Lunch and Learn

The Lohrey Recreation Center will hold a Backyard Habitat Lunch and Learn event on April 15. This free event invites community members to explore ways to make their outdoor spaces more environmentally friendly.

The Lohrey Recreation Center will educate homeowners and families on making their backyards more hospitable to native wildlife. BACKYARD HABITAT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

City of Dayton Sustainability staff will lead a discussion on plant selection and simple changes that can reduce maintenance while supporting local wildlife. The event is open to all ages and offers practical tips for creating a more sustainable home environment.

23rd Community Chautauqua “Recycling, Including Food and Food Waste”

A community Chautauqua focused on recycling and food waste will take place on April 16 at the Bath Township Building in Fairborn. The event is free and open to the public.

This discussion-based gathering will focus on how individuals can reduce waste in their daily lives and better understand recycling practices. It’s a good option for those interested in learning simple, realistic ways to help the environment.

5K Run Wild for Wildlife

Brukner Nature Center will host the “Run Wild for Wildlife” 5K on April 18 at 9:30 a.m. The event takes place on natural trails and is open to all ages, with registration required in advance.

Participants can run or walk while supporting wildlife conservation efforts. With a mix of fitness and nature, the event offers a chance to stay active while enjoying the outdoors.

6th Annual Styrofoam Recycling Collection

A Styrofoam recycling collection event will be held on April 18 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights. Staff and volunteers will be on site collecting materials for recycling.

This event gives residents a chance to properly dispose of Styrofoam, which is not typically accepted in standard recycling programs. It’s a simple way to reduce waste and help keep non-biodegradable materials out of landfills.
