Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15, honoring Hispanic and Latino history and contributions to society. It is celebrated throughout September 15 to Oct. 15.

There will be many events during Hispanic Heritage Month for Sinclair students to be able to learn more about Hispanic and Latino history on the campus in Dayton.
Hispanic Heritage Month was first proclaimed as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, and in 1988, it was extended into a full month by an act of Congress. The dates coincide with independence days in many Latin American countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua on Sept. 15 and Mexico on Sept. 16.
Sinclair’s Michael and Debbie Carter, Center for American History, presents programs dedicated to the theme and history of Latinos during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“Bittersweet Harvest” Discussion
On Oct. 6, from noon to 1 p.m., Professor of Spanish at Sinclair, Derek Petrey will conduct a discussion about the Bracero Program. The guest worker program between the U.S. and Mexico operated between 1942 and 1964, playing a significant part in agricultural labor and Mexican American communities.
The event will take place in Building 11, Room 324, with a Zoom session. In addition, there will be a six-poster exhibition displayed in Building 11, Room 322.
Latino Contributions Film Screening
Sinclair will screen the film “Threads in the American Tapestry: Latino Contributions from the Founding Era Onward” on Oct 1 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Building 11, Room 324. The PBS documentary examines the role that Latino individuals and groups have played in shaping America.

Hispanic Heritage Festival
Another event for Hispanic Heritage Month is the Hispanic Heritage Festival that takes place in Dayton on Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at RiverScape MetroPark, 237 E. Monument Ave. The festival, which is free of charge, includes musical performances, food, dancing and dance lessons and other attractions.
As a Sinclair student, this will give an opportunity not only to get more information about the history and experience of the month but also participate in different events organized both by Sinclair and in the Dayton area.
Hispanic Heritage Month is much more than just another month of the year. It is a month when one can celebrate the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities and learn more about their experience.
