Produced by Students, For Students

Every semester, many Sinclair College students receive emails from the Phi Theta Kappa organization. To some, it may seem like spam or potentially a scam, especially since the name is so unfamiliar to students.

At Sinclair, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is not just a name in your inbox; it’s a gateway to leadership, scholarships and personal growth.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor fraternity for two-year colleges, recognizing academic success among students in associate’s degree programs.

Founded in 1918, PTK has grown to serve over three million members across the United States and beyond. This organization rests on four key pillars: scholarships, leadership, service and fellowship.

It aims to support high-achieving students academically, professionally and socially. Through various events, volunteer opportunities and leadership programs, members grow both inside and outside the classroom.

At Sinclair, the chapter is called Nu Pi and represents the local branch of this global network. Despite its long history, PTK is often misunderstood on campus.

To join Phi Theta Kappa at Sinclair, students must meet specific academic criteria. This includes completing at least 12 credit hours of associate degree coursework and maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Eligible students are usually invited via email, but they must accept the invitation and pay a one-time membership fee to officially join.

“There’s a misconception that the program is a scam, but I can assure you that it’s designed to help students. Once students understand the benefits, they realize it’s a legitimate opportunity,” said Nu Pi Advisor Cari Gigliotti.

While some students think this program is not legitimate and hesitate to pay the fee, especially when they are unsure of what they will gain, those who join quickly find the benefits far outweigh the costs.

Throughout the year, PTK members can attend various events, with more hosted by the fraternity. Last year, PTK organized a convention exclusively for members.

This event featured not just local colleges like The Ohio State University and Ohio University, but also attendance from other schools.

“There were over 70 four-year colleges there, and all of them brought information about scholarships available only for PTK students,” Gigliotti said.

Gigliotti serves as one of the Nu Pi chapter advisors, along with Dr. Walter Furness and Erin Thomas. Gigliotti has been involved with the program for a year and is committed to helping students grow within it. Beyond networking and academic support, Nu Pi offers students leadership opportunities.

Joining PTK can lead to real-world advantages, from transfer success and scholarships to interview preparation and professional networking. For many students, the biggest benefit is the community and confidence they gain along the way.

“This membership in PTK is more than just a resume booster; it’s for students balancing academics, work, and personal commitments—another way to connect and stay motivated,” Gigliotti said.

For students who qualify, PHI Theta Kappa can be a launchpad for both academic and personal development. From leadership roles and scholarships to national conferences and local service, Nu Pi offers more than most students expect.

So, the next time that PTK email appears in your inbox, take a second to look. It might not be spam; it could be the beginning of your next opportunity as a student at Sinclair.
