“You can read about a place and its culture, but there is no substitute for actually experiencing it yourself” – Deborah Gavlik, Director of Sinclair’s International Education Department

Contrary to popular belief, college is the perfect time to try new things. Sure, many probably expect you to know what you’re studying and what career you will pursue for the rest of your life, but what’s the point? It’s more exciting to go somewhere new, try something new, and meet new people, as opposed to sticking with the familiar all your life. Studying abroad is the perfect opportunity to experience all that this world has to offer.

The What: Studying abroad is a period of time, which can range from weeks to years, where students travel to another country to continue their studies.

The Who: You! When asked who she would recommend study abroad to, Gavlik said that “study abroad programs are beneficial to any student who is interested.”

The Why: The benefits of studying abroad are never ending. It enables you to become immersed in a new language and culture, which allows for limitless learning and growth as an individual. Furthermore, it will provide a unique challenge, especially if you are unfamiliar with the language. Studying abroad opens a plethora of colorful doors and opportunities to meet new people, explore new places, and try new foods. It provides a space for introspection; you will inevitably learn more about yourself and perhaps, through experimentation and finding new interests, future goals will become clearer. Not to mention: it will look great on your resume.

On the other hand, there are a few unattractive features to studying abroad. For example, living in another country can cause stress, homesickness, and culture shock. Plus, a scary looking bank account. Ultimately though, the benefits significantly outweigh these impermanent disadvantages.

“Overall, there are immense, long-term benefits to studying abroad, and the options for travel are boundless.”

The How: The options, much like the benefits, are near limitless. The most straightforward method for studying abroad is to go through a program offered by your school. In fact, Sinclair has its own study abroad program. In March of 2024, there is a week-long trip to Italy, which includes a culinary based itinerary. June of next year includes a ten-day program to Ireland where students will get to visit Dublin, learn about and participate in the rich culture, and much more. Additionally, you can travel through programs offered by other universities in the US, even if you do not attend the university.

Similarly, you can apply to attend universities in other countries. Exchange programs are often a cheaper way to travel.

Another method is to just go! Today, many classes are offered online making it easy to continue your education regardless of your location.

Overall, there are immense, long-term benefits to studying abroad, and the options for travel are boundless.
