Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is holding a food drive for all non-perishable food items at Sinclair Community College throughout the month of September.

Gary Ernst, co-president for PTK, said that he hopes this drive will help to feed the estimated 70,000 families who are helped by the local food kitchens and food banks of Montgomery, Darke and Greene counties.

“I figure between the students, faculty and staff, we should be able to fill all three bins up,” Ernst said. “Hopefully more than once.”

He said students can donate to this food drive by bringing their non-perishable food items to Sinclair and place them into the donation bins located at the end of each walkway from the  Dayton campus’ main parking garage.

Ernst said they placed the bins at each of the walkways from the garage so students do not have to walk a far distance on campus with their food items.

Examples of acceptable foods are canned goods, unopened boxes of food such as cereals or anything that does not have a soft expiration date.

Ernst said that the food drive is starting off slow but he hopes that students will pick up the slack in the next few weeks.

“It’s a good way for not only Sinclair, but for our community to feel good,” Ernst said. “It is a feel good project.”

He said the donation bins will be removed on Sept. 28, but if students want to make a contribution after that date, they can make a donation to the Food Bank located near Sinclair’s gravel lot at 427 West Washington St.
