The Sinclair fieldhouse is under construction for summer term in order to replace the floor that has been down since its original construction in 1974.

On Jan. 9, 1983, a large water main burst under Robert Drive causing a flood that left significant damage to Sinclair’s lower levels.  Four days later, the water main burst again.

In the fieldhouse, there is a small gold plaque marking the dates and the water level height, which was close to three feet.

In addition to the fieldhouse floor needing to be replaced, the weight room’s floor also needs to be replaced after showing signs of damage from wear and tear.

The fieldhouse and weight room floors will be reconstructed by Dynamic Sports Flooring, after being awarded a bid of $291,200 in May, according to the Agenda of the Sinclair Community College Board of Trustees.

“Between the weight room and the fieldhouse, costs for repairs are close to a half million dollars,” physical activities center coordinator, Travis
Beetley said.

According to the Sinclair Capital Budget, the cost for both floor replacements can be no more than $485,500. More than $100,000 is being contributed by the state.

“The fieldhouse and weight room will be closed throughout all summer courses and should be all finished by the beginning of fall quarter,” Athletic Director Jack Giambrone said.

Since renovation is scheduled during summer courses, a drop-off in attendance is not expected, according to Giambrone.

“I think people will be excited to see what’s happening, and I think it could increase enrollment,” Giambrone said. “After they pour the new floor down, we’ll have a nice cushion and it will be a lot safer for all of our activities.”
