Anime and manga lovers were given a wealth of exciting news at this year’s Anime Expo. Fans in Los Angeles for the annual event aren’t the only ones with something to cheer about. Among the litany of announcements are some bound to be cheered around the globe. Here are a few that had The Clarion excited.
1. Return of a Legendary Series
If you haven’t heard of “Kinnikuman” then don’t be shy: millions were saying the exact same thing when a trailer for its upcoming anime was released. For those not in the know, the manga was serialized from 1979-1987. The impact its had on the genre can still be seen in the big named moves and extravagant wild fights common today. A revival of the manga has been going strong since 2011 and the new anime is already being streamed on Netflix.
The first two episodes of “Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Arc” were premiered at the expo and if its trailer is anything to go by fans of fighting anime are in for a wild ride.
Those of us not lucky enough to have rooted for the eponymous Muscle Man finally have a chance to see what the hype is about.
2. RWBY Finds a New Home
The popular franchise is back with a vengeance after joining Viz Media’s burgeoning roster. Fans were given cause to worry after the IP’s previous home, Rooster Teeth, went defunct on May 15. Now they have something to celebrate after finding out the beloved saga will continue.
3. Witch Hat Atelier Joins the Ranks of Trigun and Batman Ninja with its Own Anime
Witch Hat Atelier has been wowing readers since 2016 and was bound to get an adaptation sooner rather than later. Next year an anime based on the popular series by Kamome Shirahama is set to drop on Crunchyroll. But that’s not all.
Trigun Stampede is getting a sequel that brings back Vash and co for more badlands shenanigans. DC’s Dark Knight is returning to feudal Japan in Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League. But the most interesting announcement deserved a separate place on this list.
4. Lord of the Rings Get an Anime
One can only imagine how unexpected the unveiling of “The Lord of the Rings: The Ride of the Rohirrim” was. Most people might scoff at the idea especially after a few adaptations of Tolkien’s magnum opus failed to measure up. However, what has been shared is highly promising and certainly worth keeping an erye out for.
Award-winning Director Kenji Kamiyama is no stranger to the industry with a career dating back to the 80s. Even more impressive is the presence of acclaimed Philipa Boyens, screenwriter of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and King Kong (2005). Gaia Wise (The Chelsea Detective) and Brian Cox (Succession) are just two of the actors lending their vocal talents to the project.
Scheduled to come out in December, the animated film takes place 183 years before the Lord of the Rings, focusing on the a war between Rohan and Dunland.
