On East Fifth Street, wedged into the heart of the Oregon district, is a small eatery named CULTURE. The name certainly lives up to the flavors presented. Started in 2023 by local culinary powerhouse Chef Dane Shipp, the restaurant’s mission statement is to “provide an authentic experience”. After eating there, that promise certainly was fulfilled in their recipes.
The menu is a “greatest hits” of staple comfort foods from a variety of different cultures and cuisines, often with a unique spin or fusion by Dane. Cajun po’boys, perfectly seasoned jerk chicken, and East Coast-inspired sandwiches share the menu with a unique harmony.
The menu also offers completely new tastes with dishes like their Spicy Jalapeno Crab Cake pasta and a vegan sandwich made from a sizeable piece of a fried Lion’s Mane mushroom, humorously called “Trippin’ on Shrooms”.
The restaurant is adorned with the memories of monumental figures. Images of Black culture legends, pivotal events and artworks, seminal to the development of the beautiful portfolio that is our world.
The covers of beloved albums are scattered throughout the restaurant, such as “Return to the 36 Chambers” by Wu-Tang Clan legend Ol’ Dirty Bastard, a photo of Muhammad Ali’s iconic knockout against Sonny Listin, and expressionist art by the ordering counter.
Truthfully, my only criticism of the restaurant was a considerable amount of wall space that could be filled with more amazing decor. Culture is such a joy to the Oregon district, and is a valued addition to the Gem City.
In 2024, Dane opened his second restaurant concept, Nood Bar, focusing on Asian flavors, such as bao buns and noodles. With more passion, more restaurants and more inspired creations, Chef Dane shows no sign of slowing down.
