DAYTON, Ohio – U.S. Congressman Mike Turner, R-District 10, joined Sinclair College’s President Steven Johnson for a press conference on Wednesday, May 28 in Building 12. Turner thanked Johnson and Sinclair College for hosting multiple heads of state from the Balkans and other European countries.

Leaders and representatives of nations from all over Europe came as part of the commemoration of the thirty-year anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords.

Sinclair became the confidential host during the recent NATO assembly to leaders of various countries including Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.

While the main assembly was held at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center and other panels took place at the University of Dayton, Johnson expanded on Sinclair’s unique role to create a space for these leaders to create productive, diplomatic conversation.

“It was our role to provide a safe and secure, calm, and private environment over the course of several days. So that heads of state and diplomats from numerous countries could have diplomatic discussions with each other, with U.S. officials from the United States Congress, and EU officials from France, the United Kingdom, and others,” Johnson said.

Johnson proceeded to highlight the types of issues that were discussed at Sinclair. These subjects included: Balkan regional stability and security, European Union integration for several of the countries, foreign influence on geopolitics, migration and asylum policies among various other topics.

Turner provided a broad overview on NATO and all that it encompassed, discussing the assembly at the Schuster Center to Wright State University hosting the Sarajevo Symphony. Which will be playing this Thursday with the Dayton Symphony as part of the Concert for Peace being held at the Schuster Center.

“It gives us an actionable to-do list of what do we have to do both in NATO, the EU, the bilateral relationship, the multilateral relationship between the United States our European allies and the Balkans will be meaningful because of what occurred right here at Sinclair,” Turner said.

Turner emphasized how the meetings that occurred this past week will set forth the future of both the Balkans and the relationship for international and national security.
