On Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Wednesday, Nov. 16, Sinclair students will have the opportunity to
participate in an open discussion with peers. The Student Equity Summit is inspired by the
Faculty/Staff Equity Summit, which also takes place during what Sinclair calls “Equity Week.”
The theme of this year’s Equity Summit is “The Power of Shared Voices: Are We Listening?’ This
theme is intended to encourage faculty, staff, and students to be receptive and empathetic to
stories different from their own.

“The Power of Shared Voices: Are We Listening?”

One of Sinclair’s strategic priorities is equity: giving everyone what they need to be successful.
As Patty Peters, a coordinator in the Student Enrichment Office and co-chair of the Student
Equity Summit planning committee, stated, the Summit is part of making sure that Sinclair
“walks the walk” when it comes to their values.

“We want students to know that the college takes equity very seriously,” stated Peters.
As a member of the planning committee, Peters must work with her colleagues to find speakers
for the event, secure a venue (which sometimes must happen months in advance), and
coordinate incentives for people to participate.

She mentioned StoryCorps, a platform that utilizes audio recordings to share stories from
individuals worldwide. According to Peters, Sinclair has already started working to create an
archive and hopes to use it at the Summit.

While the Faculty/Staff Equity Summit has been taking place for a few years now, the 2022
Student Equity Summit is only the second of its kind. Last year’s Summit was focused on
redlining.

When asked why students should participate in the Student Equity Summit, Peters echoed that
it is a chance for them to both recount and hear lived student experiences.
To accommodate the wide variety of schedules that students have, the Student Equity Summit
will offer both virtual and in-person sessions. Sessions are 75 minutes and take place at various
times of day.

Students who participate will receive a Tartan Marketplace meal ticket and a certificate of
completion.
