International Club encourages knowledge of other cultures

The international student organization at Sinclair meets weekly to educate and discuss diversity among various cultures around the world— and it is open to all students.

“The international students organization is a student organization for international and American students to get to know about other cultures and to give the international students on campus a club so they can interact and exchange ideas and exchange cultures and things like that,” Club Vice President James Rawlins said.

“We do that through communication. We have discussions. What we do first of all in meetings, we just do our business and then we have a discussion topic that myself and the president come up with. Sometimes we’ll talk about cultural stereotype, cultural dress, food, the can’s and cannot’s in certain countries and that sort of thing.”

The club meets in Building 8 Room 036 every Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., but they are considering adding another day. The club also hosts a movie night every third Tuesday of the month, where they will show a movie from a different country.

Rawlins said every now and then, the club will also host an outing to different restaurants in the area. They are also planning future bake sales.

“I think my favorite part is expanding my mind and opening myself up to different people… I’ve been involved since May 2012,” Rawlins said.

He said in order to be considered a member, students should “like” their Facebook page and attend meetings.

“Other students should join to experience diversity and to gain knowledge of other cultures by meeting people that actually are from those places, because that’s the best way to do it other than going to those places and talking to those people that are from there and it’s just something new to try and I encourage everyone to do it,” Rawlins said.
