Sinclair Community College students will have the opportunity to put their skills to the test at DataFest, an international data analytics competition taking place March 27–29.

Presented by the American Statistical Association, DataFest brings together college students from around the world to analyze real-world data and uncover meaningful insights. This year, Sinclair students will join Montgomery College’s fully virtual Community College DataFest, participating in a fast-paced, 48-hour online competition.

During the event, teams of three to five students will be given a large dataset, kept secret until the competition begins, and challenged to explore the data, identify patterns and develop conclusions. Teams will then create a short recorded presentation, using just two slides, to tell the story behind their findings.

Unlike traditional classroom assignments, DataFest emphasizes collaboration, creativity and real-world problem solving. Students will work together throughout the weekend, choosing how and when to meet virtually using tools such as Zoom, Teams or shared documents. Mentors including faculty members, industry professionals and data experts will be available to support teams as they work through challenges.

The competition is open to all current Sinclair students and is not limited to any specific program or major. While some participants may have experience with programming or data analysis, advanced technical skills are not required. Organizers encourage students with a variety of strengths—including communication, storytelling and presentation skills—to participate, highlighting the importance of well-rounded teams.

Students can register as part of a team or sign up individually and be placed into a group. Participation is limited to ensure a high-quality experience, with space for approximately 10 to 15 teams.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, participants will have the opportunity to connect with mentors and judges from the local industry, offering valuable networking opportunities. Winning teams will be announced starting the week of April 5, with prizes awarded at an end-of-semester celebration.

By combining competition, collaboration and real-world data, DataFest offers Sinclair students a unique opportunity to step beyond the classroom and turn information into insight.
