Sinclair Community College has a plethora of activities, resources, and clubs for their students. A recent addition to the family is a brand new chess club that started on Sep. 7. This club is welcoming to all people of any level of experience, including those who know absolutely nothing about one of the world’s oldest games!

Founder Jacob Harding, a Mechanical Engineering major at the college, only picked the game a year ago.

He said, “A game of chess is best enjoyed with others, and that is what makes it exciting”.

The chess club is meant to be an inviting area to make friends while engaging in lighthearted competition. It is like a lot of clubs here in that way, just with its own flair of a classic game being its base.

I went to Chess club for one of their meetings. The people there are very inviting and patient, helping one another learn from their mistakes. Everyone moved freely around the room talking to one another about their games, or just having friendly conversation about interest. It is recommended that you bring your own board if you can. They do provide a few chess boards, but they will eventually need more as members join.

Anyone interested in the club is welcome to drop in at any time. You do not have to already be a registered member to come to the club, or know anything at all about the game. Meeting time are held from 4p.m.-6p.m. every Thursday. It is in building four in room 242, and a schedule is posted outside under the room number so you know you’ve found the right place. The door is open during club  hours, so don’t feel shy to pop in and say ‘hi’ to Harding and his clubmates.

The founder of the club would be happy to welcome new members or chess enthusiasts just looking for a place to make new friends. The club is open to all and new members are always welcome.
