On Feb. 2, Sinclair Community College recognized the many talents of professors and students alike. The 47th Annual Writers’ Workshop featured various writers and provided a platform for many to share their stories with the community.

This year’s Writers’ Workshop was held virtually. At this time, organizers acknowledged all of the hard work the writers have dedicated to developing content.

During the conference, members expressed hardships, shed light on good moments and provided advice for upcoming writers. Every individual was able to connect with each attendee in different ways.

The Writers’ Q&A was very informative and enlightening. Here, many of the writers were extremely vulnerable, as they were able to tap into the struggles or situations they have experienced and share their wisdom.

As the event progressed, participants specifically inquired about making time to write. “It is not about finding the time, it’s about being brave enough to do it,” said local writer and professor Furaha Henry Jones, “Sometimes, the writing hurts.”

Being vulnerable and offering perspective into personal hardship creates an opportunity to be creative and connect with others. In doing so, they were allowed to truly express themselves through their writing.

Many attendees presented questions, asking about being comfortable enough to speak to large congregations about pain.

In her workshop, “Diamond’s in the Dew: An Appalachian Experience” author Nora Stanger said, “Public speaking makes it easier to open up to strangers.”

Stanger went into more detail, explaining that she utilizes her story to close the divide we have in the world today. By revealing her challenges to the audience, someone else may be inspired to share their own narrative and recognize their potential.

English Professor Denise Aselage notes the cherished endeavors of the English Department to fully showcase the event and the immense work the staff have dedicated. Namely, Aselage illustrates the website developed by Jamey Dunham for this year’s affair The website alone was essentially a prominent theme of the occasion, for it features a wide array of key information, ranging from the many workshops to information about Sinclair’s English and Creative Writing programs.

Aselage speaks highly of the administration and her co-director, Sharyn Hunt, proving much insight into their diligence and passion.

Being a part of the Q&A, as well as reflecting on the Workshop, brought many writers together in a positive and unique way. Each and every writer brought something different to the table, inspiring connectivity and inclusion.

If you are looking for guidance or insight about the writing process—whether it be how to write or finding the motivation to write— the annual Writers’ Workshop is a noted opportunity hosted by Sinclair’s English department. For those who were not able to attend this year’s Writer’s Workshop, taped sessions are available for viewing on the event’s website.
