It’s been difficult coming up with what to write about President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration.
You would think that for an African-American it would be fairly easy. I would write about how Obama makes me believe I can do anything and he’s a good role model for every Black person in America.
I realized that’s not what I want to say.
Granted, I do feel that the sky really is the limit – for all races – since Obama has been elected to the highest office in the land but – and there’s always a but – I don’t want to get my hopes up. I can’t get this fairy tale idea of Obama being some Black superhero.
As Obama said himself, for the country to get out of this rut it is in now, everybody – emphasis on the “everybody” – has to play his or her part.
I’m not so sure everybody will. I think that some of the people who helped put Obama in office will be satisfied with just that. They won’t want more, or expect the best from him, they’ll just be glad that a Black man is president.
I hope I’m wrong.
I hope that people will still be motivated to fight for change.
I hope that people won’t get complacent.
I hope that America will really work together and become unified.
Let’s just pray I haven’t gotten my hopes up too high.
