Culinary Club prepares for Thanksgiving sale

Not looking forward to baking this Thanksgiving?

Sinclair Community College’s Culinary Club began its prep on Nov. 4 for the Thanksgiving Day Bake Sale. Items range from $4 to $10 and include an assortment of pies—pecan, pumpkin, apple and sweet potato—as well as rolls and breads.

“We’re trying to get everything out before Thanksgiving so people can have the freshness for their Thanksgiving dinner,” said Karlee Blanchard, the club’s treasurer. “It’s a pretty decent price for homemade goods.”

Blanchard, 18, is a first-year Culinary Arts major. She said all profit would go to the culinary fund to help aid the club’s trip to Chicago for May’s National Restaurant Association food show.

All orders are placed in advance, according to Blanchard, and must be in by Nov. 17 at noon. Orders are picked up on Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Building 13 Room 409.

Culinary Arts instructor Gabe Gardner oversees the Culinary Club as the faculty advisor. Gardner said the club is baking more than 200 pies, 100 dozen rolls and 35 to 80 loaves of bread.

“We make everything right here from scratch,” Gardner said. “We usually hit the mark pretty close of the actual needed amount. If we have extra, I’ll give them to the students who helped out.”

Gardner said this is the eighth year the Culinary Club has put together the Thanksgiving Day Bake Sale. Members of the Culinary Club spend between 50-60 hours in the kitchen over the three weeks spent to put together the available items, according to Gardner.

“There’s a sense of accomplishment afterwards,” Gardner said. “There’s also a strong desire to take a nap.”

Gardner said it’s all worth it when the orders get picked up on Nov. 25.

“We breath a sign of relief,” said Gardner about the pick-up day. “We’re just happy to see that every one got what they wanted.”

Order forms for the Thanksgiving Day Bake Sale can be picked up in Building 13 Room 420. Items are paid for by cash or check on when picked up.
