On Thursday, April 14, the 48th Annual Writers Workshop event will return to Sinclair.

This event is sponsored by Sinclair’s English Dept. and will be held at the Dayton Campus in room 3-001 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There are four different authors presenting including Emily Morgan, Martha Dunsky, Carrie Bebris, and Estella Gonzalez. These published authors will discuss different writing techniques and give tips on how to get published.

The event is free to not only all Sinclair faculty and students but also free to the community. It is being hosted online and via Zoom. Lisa Tyler, who is a professor of English at Sinclair, will be coordinating and helping run the Writer’s Workshop.

“Sinclair has many creative writers, and this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from a professional for free,” said Tyler.

Central Ohio Fiction Writers will be attending. They used to be affiliated with Romance Writers of America but are now an independent, non-profit organization, helping raise awareness of resources writers can take advantage of.

Speakers have been encouraged to include writing exercises and will also have a Q&A at the end of each session, which gives people a chance to get a professional’s perspective.

“The idea is to encourage creative writing, not only on campus but in the Montgomery County community,” said Tyler.

Students are required to register if planning on attending and must register for each session individually. Once registered, they are welcome to join in at any time.

Tyler says the plan is to be able to record the sessions and send the recordings to people who didn’t attended but were registered.

Between 9:30 – 10:45 a.m., the workshop will begin with “Writing Nonfiction Picture Books” with Emily Morgan. After that, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., the session goes into “Adapting a Historical Event for Children” with Martha Dunsky. Then leading into the afternoon from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. Carrie Bebris will be hosting “The Hero’s Journey for Writers”. Finally, Estella Gonzalez will be sharing her collection “Mapping Memory: Using the Five Senses to Create Character and Setting” from 2-3:15 p.m.
