YourVoice: The Meaning of Thanksgiving

Whether hosting a Thanksgiving dinner or just a guest for the feast, Thanksgiving means different things for everyone. For the ones cooking the feast, it may mean stressing over the perfect meal, or the excitement or dread of having the whole family at their homes. For the guests, it could be about the family they have not seen in so long or the wait to be over so the delicious food that’s being cooked is ready to eat. However, people view the holiday or their role in it, Thanksgiving means something different for everyone.

“I am thankful for my family, the life they have given, and being raised in a Godly household. Thanksgiving means spending time with my family and forgetting our differences,” said Isabel Gaston, a Hospitality Major at Sinclair.

Some have Friendsgiving instead of the traditional Thanksgiving, which is a group of friends coming together to celebrate the holiday.

“I’m thankful for my fellow music majors because they are a huge support system. For me Thanksgiving is spending time with even just my chosen family,” said Savanna Stewart a Music Major at Sinclair.

Sometimes it’s a mixed event for both family and friends to come together despite their differences.

“I’m thankful for my friend group and family that’s so supportive. The meaning of Thanksgiving is a way to remember that we as a society need to ignore differences, cooperate, come together and appreciate each other,” said Micah Miller a Piano Performance Major at Sinclair.

And for some, it is just the relief and comfort to have family and friends together after another stressful year of COVID.

“I’m thankful for my family and friends being healthy and having Sinclair Community College being so supportive over the last year,” said Gloria Olberding a Social Work Major at Sinclair.

Hopefully, everyone has a great Thanksgiving no matter what they are thankful for and what it means to them. Happy Thanksgiving from the Clarion.
