As another summer has passed us by, the start of fall semester 2014 brings another Welcome Week hosted by Sinclair.
Welcome Week event planning is a coordinated effort among multiple Sinclair departments. The events will be held from Monday, Aug. 18 through Thursday, Aug. 21. The Welcome Week committee worked together to create events to help students become familiar with the campus.
On Monday students will enter campus while being greeted with cookies and trail mix. Members of the Welcome Week committee will direct students who are unfamiliar with the campus layout.
“The goal of welcome week is to welcome students back to school,” Tom Roberts, advisor for Sinclair Ohio Fellows, said. “So there will be staff handing out directions to help students get direction. It’s to really help them navigate their way around the campus for that first couple of weeks.”
Karen Williams, a Specialist in Student and Community Engagement, was instrumental in the planning process. Events to be held Tuesday through Thursday are sponsored by the Campus Activity Board also known as CAB.
On Tuesday, during Welcome Week Fest, CAB sponsored events will be held outside on the rolling hills in front of Building 10 if weather permits. In the event of rain all activities will be held in building 8.
During Welcome Week Fest clubs and organizations from all over campus will have tables set up to inform and meet new and returning students. CAB will officially be launched on this day at noon and free cake will be offered.
“I’m very excited, it’s something that should be fun and new. A great opportunity for students to get involved,” Williams said as she spoke of the launch of CAB.
There will be 77 participants in all, including outside vendors. Aramark will be grilling out, the life connections truck, RTA meeting bus and the Army will be there. On Wednesday and Thursday from 10am until 4pm there will also be a movie, sponsored by CAB, shown in Building 8 where students can enjoy watching Spiderman and munch on free popcorn. CAB has a full calendar of events scheduled for the upcomig semester. The Movie Night will be a recurring event happening once a month with a variety of films being shown.
Williams said that there was something similar to CAB years ago, the Student Leadership Association, and according to Williams it
was very successful. SLA was a group of students that alternated
taking the lead on planning campus events. “Part of being in CAB
will be learning how to put on events and being in charge, not just planning by yourself, you’ll take a lead. It’s a learning experience,” Williams said. CAB is currently seeking students who are
looking to gain leadership skills and work together to coordinate events on campus. For more information or to fill out an application
