For many Sinclair students, the summer term registers as a break from classes and an ample amount of time to play in the sun. But for those who are interested, volunteering through the United Way is another way to spend their time away from class.
Chatoya Hayes, manager of Volunteer Connection for the United Way of Greater Dayton, said that volunteering has many benefits for Sinclair students.
“It allows you to receive additional skills that you can’t learn in the classroom,” Hayes said in a phone interview. “For example if you want to volunteer in the choice of your career or profession, you could take some time out to explore your options. Volunteering is always a good place to start and gain some real world experience that you could compare to what you’re learning in the classroom. It’s also a time where you can display your talents.”
She said that although many students, especially Sinclair students, may have jobs or other obligations that occupy most of their free time, those obligations shouldn’t hold them back from volunteering.
“At the end of the day, you [will] get so much fulfillment and get so much more personally than you ever expected [from volunteering],” Hayes said.
Through the website www.volunteerdayton.org, Sinclair students can volunteer their free time from their summer schedule at any of the listed Dayton organizations.
For many of the volunteer opportunities listed on the website, registration is required and can be performed by simply clicking on the “express interest” link inside the description for each event.
Hayes said that registering ahead of time is easy and ensures that the coordinators will have a specific task and enough materials for each volunteer to be thoroughly involved.
Listed below are some of the events that are scheduled for July and August.
All events are subject to change and are updated on a daily basis, according to Hayes. For the most accurate information, visit the website
