Englewood, Huber Heights and Preble County have teamed up to hold a free concert for Sinclair Community College students featuring country music recording artist Austin Hicks, according to Dawayne Kirkman, manager of Huber Heights and Englewood Learning Centers.

The “Country Concert Countdown to Fall Quarter” will give students a chance to register for fall classes at the Englewood Learning Center on August 12 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and listen to live music from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., according to Kirkman. There is no charge and drinks and food will be provided.

“I still don’t think a lot of students know that they can complete all nine enrollment steps right here on site,” Kirkman said. “They can do their application, financial aid, placement test, new student orientation, meet with a counselor, pick your classes, register, pay and tartan card. The concert will be on the lawn.”

There will be giveaways that include Sinclair scholarships and YMCA memberships, among other things, Kirkman said. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the concert.

Austin Hicks, a 19-year-old online student and business major, just released his first self-debuted album in September of 2009 and looks forward to singing a song co-written with his father and brother called “I still pledge allegiance.”

“The song was initially written to honor our troops,” said Hicks. “But it developed into a song signifying the importance of our nations flag. I heard about a bunch of students at a school who had to turn their shirts inside out because they had the American flag on it and I thought that was just terrible.”

Hicks is touring the country right now and said he is excited to play so close to home and among the other students at Sinclair.

“I lived a quarter mile away from the (Englewood) campus and it’s the first time I get to play so close to home,” Hicks said. “It’s also cool to show people you can be a college student and pursue another dream as well. A lot of students work, own businesses, play music and I know first hand how hard that can be.”

This is the fourth year the learning centers have come together to put on a concert for students and Kirkman said he thinks this is going to be the best one yet.

“The country concert countdown will be a chance for the entire community to come out to the ELC and have a great time,” Kirkman said. “It will be a chance to get registered for fall quarter classes while enjoying refreshments and giveaways. And also listen to great live country music by Austin Hicks. It will be special.”
