Sinclair students fill up the lobby in Building 7 while waiting to get into the bookstore on Jan. 4, the first day of winter quarter. On Jan. 5, Sinclair Community College announced its anticipation for record enrollment for the 2010 winter quarter.

Up seven percent from last year’s enrollment numbers, more than 24,000 students are registered for classes this quarter, according to a press release found on www.sinclair.edu. The increase marks the eighth consecutive quarter in which Sinclair has experienced a rise in enrollment, according to Natasha Baker, director of Public Relations.

In the press release, Sinclair President and CEO Dr. Steven Johnson stated the college is ready to help this amount of students.

“These students are coming to us to change their lives in positive ways, many seeking help to offset the troubles of the economy and to realize a better life,” Johnson said on the college’s Web site.

Last quarter, Sinclair’s enrollment numbers increased by 15 percent from the previous fall quarter.

The question Sinclair seems to be asking itself is when will enrollment begin to level off.

“That’s one of those guessing games we have here,” Baker said. “Enrollment will continue to rise as long as the economy stays the same. We expect it to continue to stay on the upside for at least another year or so.”

Baker said Sinclair needs 14 days to determine a final number on enrollment for each quarter.
