Open to the public, the Burnell Roberts Triangle Gallery and the Zone VI Photography Gallery – located on the fourth floor of Building 13 – works to enhance student learning and enrich the Miami Valley’s cultural landscape, according to the Sinclair Arts department’s Web site on sinclair.edu.

Gallery Coordinator Pat McClelland has been in charge of Sinclair’s art galleries since 2005 and said the art department tries to keep them very diverse.

“The work we have in (The Triangle Gallery) now is very traditional painting, but in February there will be an installation artist who’s doing this contemporary, high-tech group project,” McClelland said. “At times we’ll have traditional sculpture in there, abstract drawings. We really try to mix it up as much as possible.”

Recently opened, the Zone VI Photography Gallery is displaying “Hinterland” by Shelley Murney.

Merriam-Webster.com defines hinterland as a region remote from urban areas or a region lying beyond major metropolitan or cultural areas.

“The landscapes I am drawn to are, by their nature, worn, generally containing abandoned or deteriorating forms. I am interested in these places because in ways, they inform me about my cultural identity, who I am, and where I fit into the world,” Murney said in her artist statement that is on showcase along with her art.

McClelland also said the gallery is one of the better learning tools for Sinclair’s art majors.

“It’s just a chance (for students) to see what contemporary artists are doing. It’s a chance for students to compare their work to work by professional, established artists,” he said.

Quentin Gadbis, an automotives major, said he visits the Building 13 galleries twice a week.

“Up here, you learn a lot of things that you never knew,” Gadbis said. “You realize how art is all around you no matter where you are.”
