Dig for a Cure Game raises money and awareness

To honor those battling cancer, the Sinclair Community College women’s volleyball team wore pink uniforms for their Dig for a Cure Game against Loraine County Community College on Oct. 17.

The Pride volleyball won the match 3-1 and more than $500 raised from the event went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Society.

“This is a day to remember all survivors and patients of cancer,” Head Coach K.C. Gan said. “We are very excited to be part of this (cancer awareness) program.”

Among women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths behind lung cancer, according to webmd.com. Breast cancer is very treatable if detected early. Webmd.com said to check your breasts once a month, three to five days after your menstrual period ends, have a thorough medical checkup once a year and have mammograms every one to two years if you are age 40 or older.

Some members of Sinclair athletics have very personal connections to the game.

Volleyball co-captain Jackie O’Meara said the Dig for a Cure Game was extra special for her because her grandfather just recently passed away from lung cancer. Athletic Director Jack Giambrone’s wife is a three-time cancer survivor as well as a breast cancer survivor.

“Because my wife is a three-time cancer survivor, whenever there is an effort to raise awareness and generate funds, it comes very near and dear to my heart,” Giambrone said. “(The Dig for a Cure Game) is an important effort and we always give 100 percent to make sure the day is special for our players. It’s very important that we contribute to causes like this.”
