U.S. Census Bureau Hiring Sinclair Students

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring thousands of temporary workers for the 2010 census, according to the bureau’s website.

The bureau has approached Sinclair Community College as a hiring hub, giving students the opportunity to earn money and gain valuable experience.  Matt Massie, career services manager at Sinclair, believes this is an important opportunity both for Sinclair and its students.

“We’re a place to get people, and Sinclair is recognized as an institution focused on higher learning and the community,” said Massie.

Every 10 years the U.S. Census Bureau takes a count of the nation’s citizens to apportion Congressional seats, distribute federal money, determine community service needs and more, according to the bureau’s website.

“It’s critical that we have an accurate count,” said Massie.

Massie encourages all students to consider pursuing a position with the bureau.  Experience with a federal agency is valuable on a resume, according to Massie.

“This should be something that everyone wants,” said Massie.

The bureau is still calculating how many positions will be available according to Massie.  Though these jobs are open to the public, the bureau approached Sinclair to offer this opportunity specifically to students.  Massie is not aware of any other participating college in the Miami Valley.

Many census takers are needed to update address lists and interview community members.  Crew leaders and crew leader assistants will coordinate census team schedules and meet with each census taker daily.  Other workers will perform daily office tasks at Local Census Offices according to the bureau’s website.  Field positions require a valid driver’s license.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid social security number and bring authorized identification such as a driver’s license and social security card.  Massie warns that without proper identification, students will be turned away.

Testing and interviews will be available every Tuesday on campus beginning Jan. 27 and continuing through March 24.  Appointment times are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Students must make an appointment to be considered for an interview.

To schedule an appointment, stop by Career Services in Building 10, Room 312 or visit their website at http://www.sinclair.edu/services/career.  To schedule an appointment by phone, call (937) 512-2772.  A practice test is available at http://www.deosileys.net/2010censusjobs/documents/documents.php.
