The Clarion

Produced by Students, For Students

Being that we’re halfway to Halloween, it only feels natural to watch some horror movies on Easter. Also, what holiday isn’t made better by a handful of horror?

The Unholy

“The Unholy” premiers April 2 in theaters and is based on the book “Shrine” by James Herbert.  It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, best known as Negan from “The Walking Dead,” and it might be the perfect reason to go back to the theater.  A young girl claims to see visions of the Virgin Mary, who imbues her with the power to perform miracles.  From the trailer, I’m guessing Mary isn’t who she claims to be.

 Resurrection

This is basically a lower-budget version of the movie “Se7en.”  It’s a typical crime drama with good pacing and an engaging plot. Director Russell Mulcahy and leading actor Christopher Lambert are best known for the ‘80s cult classic “Highlander,” and this movie is a respectable addition to their filmography.

Dracula 2000

For those of you who haven’t seen this one, don’t bother.  Gerard Butler makes an attractive Dracula, but the film hangs somewhere between the action, horror, and romance genres.  The result is not particularly action-packed, scary or romantic, but the twist ending makes it a requirement for this list.

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

You guys read that right.  One of the weirdest films out there, this indie flick takes everything you thought you needed for a good movie and includes none of those things.  For some reason that’s never explained, Jesus is alive and well in present-day Canada, and he’s out to stop the scores of vampires who are conspiring to drink the blood of the country’s lesbians.  He also receives a message from God in a bowl of ice cream.

Night of the Lepus

This low-budget creature feature from the ‘70s boasts some surprisingly famous actors, such as DeForest Kelley of “Star Trek: The Original Series” and Janet Leigh of “Psycho” stardom.  An alien spaceship crash lands on earth and unleashes a legion of murderous giant rabbits.  Most of the footage consists of regular-sized rabbits hopping around destroying tiny model towns and staging battles with enormous stuffed animals. It’s not to be missed.
