Clarion Introductions: Sports Editor

Hello everyone, and welcome to this semester’s sports news. My name is Paul Helmers, and I am the Sports Editor here at the Clarion.

I have always been a sports fan. Through my life I have been lucky enough to witness countless Hall of Famers in multiple sports, both in person and on TV. Seeing all these greats play has left me mystified, always wanting more.

I grew up just down the road in Kettering, and after high school, like so many others, I had no clue what I wanted to do or what direction I wanted to take. So, I took my chances and joined the military.

Spending those five years in the Marine Corps gave me exactly what I needed: a little bit of discipline and time to figure out the rest of my life, whether that be staying in the military or whatever else my options were.

I played sports in the past, but, if we’re being honest here, I was and am not, nor will I ever be a pro. It doesn’t take an expert scout to know that either. However, I do feel that I can ask questions, write stories, study games, and potentially even talk live about sports. I talk about sports all the time, so being a sports talk radio host sounds like a dream job to me.

And that’s what led me here. I decided I wanted to make a career out of something I love so I am now a Multimedia Journalism major, and I will be finishing up my associate’s degree in May. After that I am off to Phoenix to attend Arizona State University for a bachelor’s in Sports Journalism.

I hope you all find the same passion in your lives that I have in mine.
