{"id":9068,"date":"2013-05-02T14:59:21","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T19:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=9068"},"modified":"2013-05-02T14:59:21","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T19:59:21","slug":"earthfest-celebrates-going-green-in-dayton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2013\/05\/02\/earthfest-celebrates-going-green-in-dayton\/","title":{"rendered":"Earthfest celebrates going green in Dayton"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p>Although Sinclair Community College isn\u2019t exclusively holding an event for Earth Day, Associate Professor of English Adrienne Cassel encourages students to visit Garden Station during the Earth Fest celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Garden Station, located on Fourth St. and Wayne Ave. in Dayton, welcomes Sinclair students to attend Earth Fest in celebration of Earth Day, on April 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarden Station started in June of 2008; it was actually a local artist collective,\u201d Lisa Helm, founder and Garden Station manager said. \u201cIt was to be a community and garden art park [before turning into Garden Station].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Helm, Garden Station is created by volunteers and donations. They have no staff and no budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus is on sustainable living and creative re-use,\u201d Helm said. \u201cWe use a lot of recycled materials and community space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year for Earth Fest, there will be workshops and plant sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur workshops from the farmers market are what expanded,\u201d Helm said. \u201cWe had things like homemade cheese, homemade yogurt, home brewing, fermented foods [and] gardening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Helm said the purpose of Garden Station is to help teach people how to be more sustainable so they can rely on themselves instead of buying things they think they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a plant and seed sale, we are selling Fedco certified seeds,\u201d she said. \u201cFruits, vegetables, sunflowers and other things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helm believes that education is the key in the Dayton area, because being earth-friendly is not considered the norm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just not mainstream in Dayton,\u201d she said. \u201cJust to get more people aware, why they should know more and why they should want to know is the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the workshops are centered toward being hands-on, so those attending can apply what they learn at Earth Fest immediately, so they can take something with them when they leave.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the workshops include: \u201cJuice up your Life!\u201d which gives basics on juicing; \u201cRecycled Paper Beads\u201d that teaches those attending how to recycle paper into beads made for jewelry and d\u00e9cor; \u201cPaper You Can Plant,\u201d where learning how to make paper for writing that can also be planted in the ground to grow wildflowers is shown;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you need to go Solar,\u201d where basic principles of solar technology is discussed, along with many more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith knowledge, we can collectively decrease our carbon footprint and make the whole area [more] resilient,\u201d Helm said. \u201cPeople will be able to take care of themselves better by growing their own food, making their own food or building natural sustainable buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earth Fest at Garden Station is open to everyone in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s open to everyone to go a shade greener and learn something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on The Garden Station, how to volunteer or give donations, visit daytongardenstation.org.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although Sinclair Community College isn\u2019t exclusively holding an event for Earth Day, Associate Professor of English Adrienne Cassel encourages students to visit Garden Station during the Earth Fest celebration.
