{"id":6558,"date":"2011-05-31T12:00:50","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=6558"},"modified":"2011-05-31T10:50:47","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T15:50:47","slug":"clarion-consensus-looking-back-to-the-origin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/05\/31\/clarion-consensus-looking-back-to-the-origin\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarion Consensus: Looking back to the origin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We started the Consensus with the first issue in September of last year.\u00a0 Previously, a simple opinion column, either by a staff member or from the McClatchy-Tribune, would fill this space.\u00a0 It was really no different from what you see to the right.<\/p>\n<p>The staff felt the opinion page needed a little something different, so we decided to create the Consensus.\u00a0 The idea is and was simple\u2013the staff debates something and comes to an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s easy enough, right?\u00a0 It truly isn\u2019t.\u00a0 The entire Clarion staff is a diverse bunch.\u00a0 We don\u2019t often agree on what should go on the front page!<br \/>\nHowever, what made it challenging also made it fun.\u00a0 Journalists strive to be many things.\u00a0 Entertaining, informative, ethical&#8230; but they\u2019d also like to open your eyes to another ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Let you see the forest in spite of the trees.<\/p>\n<p>The debates weren\u2019t often harsh.\u00a0 We found as the year went on we agreed more and more, but disagreements in a newsroom isn\u2019t, well, news.\u00a0 It\u2019s what we do.<\/p>\n<p>And, not every topic we discuss is life or death.\u00a0 But we tried to be timely, honest and Sinclair-centric.<\/p>\n<p>We felt it was important to keep the topics as Sinclair-centric as possible.\u00a0 Why should the Sinclair student newspaper have nothing about Sinclair on it?<\/p>\n<p>So, when students flooded Sinclair\u2019s facebook page to complain about snow days (or a lack there of) we jumped on it.\u00a0 When something spreads through Sinclair, we want to cover it, and not just as a news story.\u00a0 We want to give our takes!<\/p>\n<p>It was a struggle at first to understand the \u2018we\u2019 of that.\u00a0 The Consensus has no byline.\u00a0 It is a group effort.\u00a0 We all pitch in.\u00a0 Sometimes one person does the writing, sometimes we team up.\u00a0 If one person feels strongly, they take the lead.<\/p>\n<p>The name is not a misnomer.\u00a0 This is a consensus.<\/p>\n<p>So, as the phrase goes, we\u2019re looking back at all of that to look forward a bit.<\/p>\n<p>For two of the staff members at the Clarion, this is the last paper they will be working on.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Linton, the design manager, has been working on the paper since fall of 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Adkins, the editor, started last May.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a long ride, and sometimes the end seemed forever away.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s here.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We started the Consensus with the first issue in September of last year.\u00a0 Previously, a simple opinion column, either by a staff member or from the McClatchy-Tribune, would fill this space.\u00a0 It was really no different from what you see to the right.
