For grade school, high school and college students, Memorial Day might just be another day that school is closed.<\/p>\n

But for those who served overseas, it\u2019s more than that.<\/p>\n

Memorial Day, which is always the last Monday in May, was originally known as \u201cDecoration Day.\u201d\u00a0 According to www.va.org, Decoration Day was first observed in 1868 by a group of union soldiers.<\/p>\n

After World War I, the day began to celebrate veterans of all American wars.\u00a0 In 1917, Congress declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.<\/p>\n

In December of 2000, Congress passed and President Clinton signed \u201cThe National Moment of Remembrance Act,\u201d which encourages people, at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to have a minute of silence for those who died in the service of the country.<\/p>\n
