{"id":6523,"date":"2011-05-24T11:00:47","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T16:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=6523"},"modified":"2014-05-20T13:24:03","modified_gmt":"2014-05-20T18:24:03","slug":"sinclair-receives-planning-grant-from-bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/05\/24\/sinclair-receives-planning-grant-from-bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinclair receives planning grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College has received a planning grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for $500,000 as part of the completion by design program.<\/p>\n<p>Sinclair, along with Stark State College and Lorain County Community College, form the Ohio cadre that will receive the planning grant.\u00a0 Sinclair is the managing partner of the Ohio cadre.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio and Florida have been announced as cadre states.\u00a0 The other two have not yet been revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were up against some tough competition,\u201d Madeline Iseli, vice president of advancement, said.<\/p>\n<p>The planning grant will be used to develop a proposal to be given to the Gates Foundation next April.\u00a0 The grant money can only be used for its specific purpose, according to Iseli.<\/p>\n<p>If Sinclair\u2019s proposal is accepted next April, the school could receive \u201cup to $10 million,\u201d according to Kathleen Cleary, dean of Liberal Arts, Communication and Social Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy fall 2012, if we get the implementation funding, we hope that students will get more of a seamless experience when they start their college experience,\u201d Cleary said.<\/p>\n<p>If the Ohio cadre is accepted, Cleary said the school will focus on helping students get through college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus is to use strategies that will lead more 16-26 year olds, especially at-risk students who might not normally be in college, to lead more of them to actually finish with a degree or certificate,\u201d Iseli said.<\/p>\n<p>Cleary will become project director of the program for the entire state on June 13.\u00a0 Cleary said that the hope for the project is to create systemic change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is all very much a partnership,\u201d Cleary said.<\/p>\n<p>Cleary said one of the reasons Sinclair and other cadre schools were chosen was because of their track record of \u201cinnovative strategies.\u201d\u00a0 Cleary listed Sinclair\u2019s student success plan and Stark State\u2019s \u201cread right program\u201d as examples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student success plan within Sinclair helps students get a good start,\u201d Cleary said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the Ohio cadre was chosen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iseli said that during the application process, Sinclair and the entire cadre put Ohio\u2019s position as a rustbelt economy in the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur argument was, our economy was transformed,\u201d Iseli said.\u00a0 \u201cWe need this.\u00a0 Generations of families that didn\u2019t need college before need college now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with the need for the grant and the Ohio cadre school\u2019s history of success, the Gates Foundation looked for schools that had good relationships and shared best practices with each other, according to Iseli.<\/p>\n<p>The final thing the Gates Foundation wanted was schools with access and good relationships with policy leaders, according to Iseli.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the public policy environment to be favorable,\u201d Iseli said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College has received a planning grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for $500,000 as part of the completion by design program.
