Life has a way of undermining our potential.<\/p>\n
Consider this.\u00a0 Everyone has some sort of goal for their lives.\u00a0 Think back to kindergarten, when the teacher would ask everyone what they wanted to be when they grew up.\u00a0 If you were like us, you had a nice mix: some said teachers; others wanted to be Michael Jordan; and there was an astronaut or two in the crowd.<\/p>\n
Flash forward to today.\u00a0 Do you still have that childlike optimism?\u00a0 Do you still have the mindset that if I think it, I can make it happen<\/em>?\u00a0 If not, don\u2019t feel bad.\u00a0 It\u2019s not your fault.<\/p>\n Life has a way of doing that.\u00a0 You want to be an astronaut, eh?\u00a0 Well, that sort of job requires schooling, and schooling isn\u2019t cheap.\u00a0 Can you write a check that big?\u00a0 Can your parents?<\/p>\n As you age, you start to realize that the world doesn\u2019t bend to your whims.\u00a0 Just because you want <\/em>to be an astronaut doesn\u2019t make it so.\u00a0 It requires work.\u00a0 That\u2019s the secret ingredient to success.<\/p>\n But the work really should begin sooner than college.\u00a0 Working hard in grade school opens up opportunities, like PSEO, which are beneficial.\u00a0 People taking those classes (or dual-enrollment) aren\u2019t nerds without social lives; they\u2019re smart people getting a leg up on you<\/em>.<\/p>\n Athletes will often talk about \u201cjust wanting an opportunity to make a play.\u201d\u00a0 For those of us about to hit the job market, it\u2019s no different.\u00a0 The only thing you can ever ask for is a chance.<\/p>\n A chance to prove yourself.\u00a0 That\u2019s the golden ticket.\u00a0 Pardon the sports reference, but that\u2019s the point guard throwing you the ball for an open jump shot.<\/p>\n Take the shot, and make it count!\u00a0 These opportunities won\u2019t come on a regular basis.<\/p>\n Those opportunities have even more significance in today\u2019s tight economy.\u00a0 One deficiency on your resume or one uninspiring job interview is all it takes.<\/p>\n Just like that, poof.\u00a0 It\u2019s over.<\/p>\n That said, wearing a nice shirt, tightening up the resume and acting like you know what you are doing\u2013all easy things to do\u2013could mean you are asked to start tomorrow, rather than \u201cdon\u2019t call us, we\u2019ll call you.\u201d<\/p>\n Funny, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 All it might take for you to go to the moon is a nice dress coat and a spell checked resume.\u00a0 That is the secret.<\/p>\n No matter how daunting it seems now, don\u2019t quit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Life has a way of undermining our potential.
