{"id":6497,"date":"2011-05-16T11:00:09","date_gmt":"2011-05-16T16:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=6497"},"modified":"2014-05-20T13:24:03","modified_gmt":"2014-05-20T18:24:03","slug":"no-tuition-increase-for-fall-quarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/05\/16\/no-tuition-increase-for-fall-quarter\/","title":{"rendered":"No tuition increase for fall quarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College will not be raising tuition for fall quarter, according to President Steven Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of what Johnson called a \u201crainy day fund\u201d worth $10 million, the school will weather the expected drops in state and levy funding and keep tuition at its current rate.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said the fund is one-time money, but they are using it to maintain accessibility of services for students and to pay salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board has a strategic priority of accessibility,\u201d Johnson said.\u00a0 \u201cEvery chance we get, we keep tuition low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said a tuition increase for winter quarter is a possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Sinclair is expecting, in what Johnson called a best case scenario, to see a 10 percent drop in both state funding and levy funding.\u00a0 Johnson called those cuts \u201cvery serious drops\u201d and Sinclair can make up for that by cutting students and services or by raising tuition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState funding and levy funding are going down,\u201d Johnson said.\u00a0 \u201cThe question is, how much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said he is \u201cvery uncomfortable\u201d with the idea of lower quality at Sinclair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither more money or less quality,\u201d Johnson said.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I think less quality is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said the college expects to know for sure later into the summer.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Johnson said he expects a tuiton increase at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<p>However, the increase won\u2019t change that Sinclair will have among the lowest or the lowest tuition in Ohio, according to Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>He estimated that the rainy day fund money could last\u2013in a best case scenario\u2013for two years.<\/p>\n<p>Details on the levy decrease<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said the drop in levy funding is unprecedented in Sinclair\u2019s history with levies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever has a Sinclair levy gone down by so much,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>The levy is a real estate tax on Montgomery County residents.
