{"id":6472,"date":"2011-05-09T11:00:37","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T16:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=6472"},"modified":"2011-05-09T09:56:33","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T14:56:33","slug":"students-find-challenge-and-reward-in-portfolio-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/05\/09\/students-find-challenge-and-reward-in-portfolio-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Students find challenge and reward in portfolio show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A culmination of two years work will see Visual Communication (VISCOM) and Interior Design (ID) students showcase their skills in the June portfolio show, according to Kyle Fisk, professor.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the June 2 show\u2013held in Building 12\u2013is twofold, Fisk said.\u00a0 The first is to allow students to have their work critiqued by industry professionals, a high percentage of which have graduated from Sinclair\u2019s design programs.<\/p>\n<p>The second, according to professor Amanda Romero, is to allow the parents of the students to see what they\u2019ve been working on for two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are amazed,\u201d Romero said of the parents.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s like, oh, now I see!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fisk said the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. with two speakers; Alyssa Evans of MeadWestVaco and Tiffany Lecklider of Paoli Furniture.\u00a0 Fisk said later on those two along with Patrick Bewinter of MeadWestVaco and Sarah Smallwood of APG INC will take part in a panel discussion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents ask how to get to the point where [those in the industry] are,\u201d Romero said.<\/p>\n<p>Fisk said he believes that the event\u2013which he called a \u201cbig production\u201d\u2013is also special for the students because it is the end of their program.\u00a0 For VISCOM and ID students, preparing for the portfolio show is their capstone,. He said that all faculty involved assist the students to make the show a success.<\/p>\n<p>Faatimah Abdusshakur, Shelly Allen, Adam Falldorf, JoAnn Garcia and Megan Richhart form the student design team for this year\u2019s portfolio show.\u00a0 Fisk said the theme is \u2018Embrace-Diversity through Design\u2019 and that the students work on all kinds of things for the event, including a logo, the designs for things on table tops and other assorted tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of work and creative tasks required of the event are a good challenge for the students because it simulates the work environment, according to Fisk.<\/p>\n<p>The design team creates posters, banners, name tags, 3-D standing artwork and a website, according to Romero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it does is allows closure to their program,\u201d Fisk said.<\/p>\n<p>Having those in the industry come to the portfolio show helps the program grow, according to Romero.\u00a0 Seeing a number of them come from Sinclair is also gratifying, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing,\u201d Romero said.\u00a0 \u201cWe must be doing something right.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A culmination of two years work will see Visual Communication (VISCOM) and Interior Design (ID) students showcase their skills in the June portfolio show, according to Kyle Fisk, professor.
