Sinclair Community College Athletic Director Jack Giambrone doesn\u2019t like to lose.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t tell [men\u2019s basketball coach Jeff] Price to get close,\u201d Giambrone said.\u00a0 \u201cI tell him to win.\u00a0 I want to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he likes hearing the things that baseball coach Steve Dintaman said prior to the start of the baseball season about the goal of his club being to win a national championship.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a coach, our job is to win,\u201d Giambrone said.<\/p>\n
However, Giambrone also makes it clear that in order to win, other things must happen.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you don\u2019t do school as a serious commitment, you don\u2019t play,\u201d Giambrone said.<\/p>\n
Student-athletes at Sinclair are expected to be active in the community and successful in the classroom, according to Giambrone.\u00a0 If they fail in either regard, they won\u2019t play. Giambrone said that during recruiting, the school will not pursue a student-athlete who shows a disinterest in school.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to win and then sacrifice the community or grades,\u201d Giambrone said.\u00a0 \u201cThey have to take care of business.\u00a0 They need to be well-balanced.\u00a0 This is big boy and big girl school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Giambrone, who coached football at Otterbein University, Eastern Kentucky University, NFL Europe and Wittenberg University, said he does miss some of the aspects of coaching.<\/p>\n
\u201cI miss the hands-on aspects of coaching,\u201d Giambrone said.\u00a0 \u201cI miss watching the kids grow.\u00a0 I miss bringing out the best in them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Being a coach and a teacher are inherently similar, and Giambrone said he sees aspects of his coaching in the way he teaches his Sports and Recreational Management classes.\u00a0 He also said his first commitment is to his classes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe question we ask is, how do we get [the students] prepared?\u201d Giambrone said.\u00a0 \u201cWe want our kids to succeed in anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Giambrone said his\u00a0predecessor, Norma Dyrus, was a big influence on him.\u00a0 She \u201ctaught me the right way to do things,\u201d he said.\u00a0 Part of his responsibility is to his coaches, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ask coaches, what do you need to win a national championship?\u201d Giambrone said.<\/p>\n
That, he said, fits into the motto of the college to \u201cfind a need and endeavor to meet it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe align our goals with those of the college,\u201d Giambrone said.\u00a0 \u201cWe just do it through sports.\u201d<\/p>\n
Because of budget cuts in the last few years, the Athletic Department had to drop a few sports.\u00a0 Giambrone said that eventually he\u2019d like to add women\u2019s softball, men\u2019s and women\u2019s golf (which was cut) and men\u2019s and women\u2019s soccer.<\/p>\n
Giambrone is also concerned with building the brand of Sinclair athletics.\u00a0 He credits the Marketing Department for developing the new logo, but said it comes down to the student-athletes.<\/p>\n
