{"id":6274,"date":"2011-04-05T10:51:23","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T15:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=6274"},"modified":"2011-04-05T10:51:29","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T15:51:29","slug":"religion-at-its-core-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/04\/05\/religion-at-its-core-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Religion at its core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a discussion about religion on campus at Sinclair Community College, four people gave their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay Puterbaugh, an alumni, Will Crawford, a Campus Ministry employee, Ribhi Dauod, an economics employee at Sinclair and Wright State University and Kendra Neargarder, a paralegal major, all gave their thoughts about their different religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe faculty here has been fantastic,\u201d Puterbaugh said. \u201cI have never had an issue here at Sinclair and they have been very encouraging in allowing others to be aware of the Wiccan religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For many quarters now, Puterbaugh has been asked to speak in a variety of classrooms to spread awareness about Wicca, which she said helps to counteract the preconceived notions that people often form when they hear the word witchcraft.<\/p>\n<p>Puterbaugh said she wants to eliminate stereotypes such as, Charmed, Sabrina or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t believe everything that Hollywood tells you,\u201d she said. \u201cTake preconceived notions out; take the Internet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crawford, a Jew, has also experienced stereotypes, though of a different nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the prof finds out I\u2019m Jewish, they expect a little bit more of me,\u201d Crawford said. \u201cI\u2019m expected to get good grades, and to show up for every class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The challenges faced by a person of faith at Sinclair are not that different from those we all face, according to Daoud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people will continue to have their misconceptions and negative stereotypes about other religions,\u201d Daoud said. \u201cBut Islam teaches us to be tolerant, respectful and open to the different viewpoints, he said. \u201cBut what is religion without understanding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the help of Sinclair\u2019s Campus Ministry and Student Muslim Association, Daoud said he hopes that he can dispel some of the negative stereotypes that are often associated with Islam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the Inter-Faith dialogue the campus college has supported us to help us understand and get along with one another,\u201d Daoud said.<\/p>\n<p>Neargarder, a Pagan, likens her faith to a kind of \u201csecurity blanket,\u201d a source of support and encouragement that goes beyond that provided by family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like an extra level of support system,\u201d Neargarder said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a discussion about religion on campus at Sinclair Community College, four people gave their thoughts.
