{"id":5881,"date":"2011-01-18T12:00:48","date_gmt":"2011-01-18T17:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=5881"},"modified":"2011-01-14T15:40:21","modified_gmt":"2011-01-14T20:40:21","slug":"pakistan-about-food-and-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2011\/01\/18\/pakistan-about-food-and-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan about food and learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An International Series event, spotlighting Pakistan, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 12-1 p.m. in the Building 8 stage area.<\/p>\n<p>Rukhi Jan, an academic advisor, and a native of Pakistan, will be the presenter.<\/p>\n<p>Everything, including the buffet-style Pakistani food, is free, and anyone can attend, Carbonaro said.\u00a0 The food and music are both chosen to help \u201cset the mood\u201d for the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Carbonaro said he has worked with Jan before and liked her presentation.\u00a0 It was helpful that she\u2019d done it before and that people around campus know her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRukhi has colleagues who recognize her name,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s important because the name means a lot.\u00a0 People know Rukhi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything in the presentation and the overall event is tailored towards Pakistan.\u00a0 The food, music, presenter and the posters designed for the event are all designed to highlight Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>According to ESL Coordinator Paul Carbonaro, the event will feature music, Pakistani food and about a 30-minute presentation by Jan, who said she wants to enlighten people to the differences of the South Asian nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got back from Pakistan,\u201d Jan said in an e-mail.\u00a0 \u201cI hope to give a brief history of the country, discuss the current situation and highlight some of the customs and people of Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, Jan said that Sinclair alumnus Shuam Ahmed, who recently returned from Pakistan, will discuss \u201chis arranged marriage process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can never learn enough about the world,\u201d Carbonaro said.\u00a0 \u201cPeople have everything to gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan was in the news recently after the death of the governor of one of Pakistan\u2019s wealthiest provinces.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/\">www.newsweek.com<\/a>, \u201cSalmaan Taseer, governor of Punjab, was shot at close range by a newly assigned bodyguard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jan said she is aware people might have stereotypes about her country, and she hopes the event can help people make a better judgment about Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunication and correct information is one way to fight the negative image,\u201d Jan said.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and, as Carbonaro noted, is not in the Middle East, but rather in South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Carbonaro said he doesn\u2019t tell Jan or any other presenter how to plan their presentations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe presenters have lots of freedom,\u201d Carbonaro said.\u00a0 \u201cI tend to trust that they\u2019ll give a presentation they would enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An International Series event, spotlighting Pakistan, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 12-1 p.m. in the Building 8 stage area.
