{"id":5430,"date":"2010-09-07T11:18:48","date_gmt":"2010-09-07T16:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=5430"},"modified":"2010-09-08T12:18:16","modified_gmt":"2010-09-08T17:18:16","slug":"first-ever-bruce-dawson-scholarship-handed-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/09\/07\/first-ever-bruce-dawson-scholarship-handed-out\/","title":{"rendered":"First ever Bruce Dawson scholarship handed out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of former <em>Clarion<\/em> adviser and journalism professor Bruce Dawson, Sinclair Community College has awarded its first ever Bruce Dawson scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship is worth $300 and its first recipient was <em>Clarion<\/em> editor Georgia Howard.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce passed away in 2005 of cancer.\u00a0After his passing the family requested donations at his funeral, but not for any expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked donations to come right back to the college because we knew how much Bruce cared about the college and <em>the<\/em> <em>Clarion<\/em>,\u201d Terri Dawson, Bruce&#8217;s wife, said.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the idea of a scholarship formed and through donations and other means, the family accrued the required $10,000 to launch the Bruce Dawson scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Dawson, Bruce\u2019s father, passed away earlier this year and left $90,000 to the scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was so very proud of Bruce,\u201d Terri said.<\/p>\n<p>As of right now, the scholarship can go to any Communication major.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to see a <em>Clarion<\/em> employee be the first choice.\u00a0That would not only include writers, but photographers, graphic design, web page construction, advertising, the whole gamut.\u00a0This was Bruce&#8217;s passion and it only seems fitting to award some one working on the paper,\u201d Terri said.<\/p>\n<p>Terri\u2019s second choice would be a Journalism major, something she says the whole family recently agreed on.<\/p>\n<p>According to Terri, his true passion was teaching and working with students, plus being outdoors and taking photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce was adviser of <em>the<\/em> <em>Clarion<\/em> from 1995-2005 a longtime journalism professor and helped shift Sinclair\u2019s journalism department out of the English department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really related to students well,\u201d Tim Sweet, general manager of Aramark and friend of Bruce\u2019s, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe worked up until a week or two weeks prior [to his passing],\u201d Terri said.\u00a0 \u201cHe drug himself in here to teach and be with his students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made an impact here,\u201d Sweet said.\u00a0 \u201cHe was that guy that never grew up, still had that passion, \u2018let\u2019s go try it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweet said that at times during Bruce\u2019s tenure at Sinclair, the friends would hide in each other\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a while I\u2019d go sit in his office when things got too hectic and he\u2019d come sit in mine and we\u2019d just talk about whatever,\u201d Sweet said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was just a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of former Clarion adviser and journalism professor Bruce Dawson, Sinclair Community College has awarded its first ever Bruce Dawson scholarship.
