{"id":5039,"date":"2010-05-17T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T13:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=5039"},"modified":"2017-06-22T11:43:35","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T16:43:35","slug":"board-approves-second-tuition-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/05\/17\/board-approves-second-tuition-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Board approves second tuition increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With an increase in enrollment and a decline in state funding, the Sinclair Community College Board of Trustees approved a 3.5 percent increase in tuition on May 11, according to an e-mail sent to college faculty and staff from President Steven Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in the fall of 2010, Students that are Montgomery County residents will see an additional $1.65 for a total of $48.20 per credit hour; out-of-county residents an additional $2.65 per credit hour and out-of-state and international students will pay an extra $5.65 per credit hour.\u00a0 Johnson said full-time students will notice an increase of $75 per year because of the approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still by far the lowest in Ohio,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cWe know that our educational services are excellent and we know that going to any university will give you a good education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trustees approved a similar increase last fall when a 3.5 percent increase was approved for winter of 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just are so thankful that the students are choosing Sinclair,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cWe\u2019re so thankful we have the resources to serve them and we\u2019re doing everything we can to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Communication student Justin Jancauskas said the increase was needed in order for the school to handle increasing enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is necessary,\u201d Jancauskas said.\u00a0 \u201cWith so many new people coming in, you need to maintain that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student Jeremiah Wolf agreed.\u00a0 He believes that the change won\u2019t be noticeable for students receiving financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSinclair\u2019s always been a really cheap school,\u201d Wolf said.\u00a0 \u201cRaising (tuition) a dollar or two isn\u2019t a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colleen, a nursing student who asked that her last name not be published, said she disliked the decision but wouldn\u2019t complain because other nursing programs are still more expensive than Sinclair\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not too happy about it because I don\u2019t get financial aid or student loans,\u201d Colleen said.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Trustees also approved an expansion for Warren County\u2019s Courseview Campus Center in Mason. \u00a0An additional 32 acres of land was purchased near the satellite campus and \u201cwill be used to accommodate the continued enrollment growth of the campus,\u201d according to the e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe enrollment at Courseview is much higher than we were expecting at this time,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThe finances are good and the enrollment is going to continue to increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courseview Campus has experienced an unexpected growth in enrollment with more than 1,000 students enrolled. Sinclair still must await state approval with an expected decision dated for the summer.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the achievements of the 2009-10 academic year, the Board of Trustees approved a faculty compensation plan that include a one-time \u201cThank You Payment\u201d of $1,000 to all full-time employees, according to the e-mail.
