At Spring Fling, portraits were taken and awards were given, but like other ceremonies this year, a Michael Jackson tribute stole the show.<\/p>\n

Surprise Jackson tribute<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Spring Fling\u2019s long-teased surprise guest was revealed as Matt Macis, a 21-year-old entertainer known for his impersonations of Jerry Lewis and Michael Jackson.\u00a0 Macis performed several songs as Jackson for the crowd, including \u201cThe Way You Make Me Feel,\u201d \u201cBillie Jean\u201d and \u201cThriller.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you come out as an impersonator, especially with a diverse crowd like here, it\u2019s kinda like everyone does have their own opinion,\u201d Macis said.\u00a0 \u201cThey think, \u2018oh, an impersonator, that\u2019s stupid, that was the special guest?\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019m sure that\u2019s what some people thought\u2026Other people were probably like, \u2018wow, that\u2019s pretty cool,\u2019 or those who were non-believers became interested once everybody else got into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining Macis on stage were Rowdy Tartan Cheerleaders LeRae Anthony, Vanae Pate and Keisha Brown, who performed as backup dancers.\u00a0 For the final song, the cheerleaders went into the audience to encourage people to get up and dance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was great,\u201d Pate said.\u00a0 \u201cWe love Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fashion Show<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Tartan Bookstore Fashion Show was well-received by the Spring Fling crowd.\u00a0 Student models showed off clothing and accessories available for purchase including culinary and nursing attire, backpacks, computers and spring clothes for men, women and children.<\/p>\n

Several audience members lined the entrance to the stage area for a front-row seat on the catwalk that went from the stage to the steps.\u00a0 Each model was cheered and photographed by the crowd.<\/p>\n

Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Emceeing both the fashion show and the award ceremony was local live talk show host Jody Coleman, a Sinclair Community College alumnus.\u00a0 Coleman used humor at various points to address both the absence of some winners and his trouble pronouncing some names.<\/p>\n

Several departments and student clubs received Oscar-style statuettes, including the Campus Police, Aramark, Business Services, the Clarion<\/em>, the Choral Music Association, M.E.L.O. and Student Leadership Development.<\/p>\n

Awards were also given to student-voted favorites such as Derek Petrey for favorite professor, the Library for favorite place to hang out, \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d for favorite Theatre production and Joseph Stueve for favorite columnist.<\/p>\n

Students react<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Health Information Management student Andy Parker said she enjoyed Spring Fling.\u00a0 She took pictures in the photo booth near the gym and enjoyed the activities and prizes at the several tables set up in the lower level.\u00a0 Her favorite moment was when students were dancing in the stage area before the awards ceremony started.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was fun,\u201d Parker said.\u00a0 \u201cThere was a lot of stuff to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Radiology student Brooke Johnson-Johns wasn\u2019t at Spring Fling for very long, but she thought the Michael Jackson performance was \u201creally cool.\u201d\u00a0 She enjoyed the environment, though she felt like it was cramped inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really nice, but it was really crowded,\u201d Johnson-Johns said.\u00a0 \u201cAs long as the weather is fine, I\u2019d say (do it) outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
