{"id":4840,"date":"2010-05-03T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T13:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=4840"},"modified":"2017-06-22T11:26:28","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T16:26:28","slug":"no-tea-for-me%e2%80%94i-prefer-coffee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/05\/03\/no-tea-for-me%e2%80%94i-prefer-coffee\/","title":{"rendered":"No tea for me\u2014I prefer coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is anybody else tired of polar politics?\u00a0 Democrats are evil.\u00a0 Republicans are out of touch.\u00a0 The left is too liberal.\u00a0 The right is too conservative.\u00a0 It\u2019s one side against the other all the time, and I\u2019m tired of it.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for independent voters to get together and make their voices heard.<\/p>\n<p>The big \u201cindependent\u201d group getting attention is the Tea Party Movement, but I don\u2019t identify with them.\u00a0 Sure there are independent trainings like The Patriot Caucus, \u201can effort aimed at developing statewide infrastructure for the purpose of influencing the outcome of elections,\u201d but Tea Party sites routinely use disrespectful language toward government officials to garner support for their cause.<\/p>\n<p>For example, TeaPartyPatriots.org refers to the president as \u201cMr. Obama.\u201d\u00a0 TaxDayTeaParty.com has a page entitled \u201cDump Harry Reid\u201d that doesn\u2019t say anything about <em>why<\/em> they want to \u201cdump\u201d the Senate majority leader.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what I\u2019m after.\u00a0 I want intelligent, independent, diverse political discourse from all points of view, not just one, without name-calling or disrespect.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the Coffee Party.\u00a0 Like the Tea Party, the Coffee Party Movement was started to fulfill the need for political discourse among citizens.\u00a0 Independent thought is valued and community gatherings are encouraged.\u00a0 Unlike the Tea Party, the Coffee Party uses civility and respect to hash out their differences.<\/p>\n<p>The Coffee Party Movement was inadvertently started by Annabel Park, an immigrant from South Korea.\u00a0 The movement was the result of an angry Facebook status update that grew into a Facebook fan page, according to a February article at the Washington Post.\u00a0 Since then, Park has helped found Coffee Party USA, a website that serves as a forum for \u201cdeliberation guided by reason amongst the many viewpoints held by our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No preexisting ideology?\u00a0 Diversity of members and opinions?\u00a0 Recognizing the federal government as \u201cthe expression of our collective will\u201d and not as an enemy?\u00a0 This is something I can get behind.<\/p>\n<p>The expression of many points of view with true care and consideration for everyone\u2019s concerns is best for everyone in the long run.\u00a0 That is why with you as my witnesses, I hereby take the Civility Pledge:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a member or supporter of the Coffee Party, I pledge to conduct myself in a way that is civil, honest, and respectful toward people with whom I disagree.
