{"id":4434,"date":"2010-03-08T10:31:02","date_gmt":"2010-03-08T15:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=4434"},"modified":"2017-06-22T11:12:19","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T16:12:19","slug":"free-resources-can-help-students-with-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/03\/08\/free-resources-can-help-students-with-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Free resources can help students with finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The snow is melting, the temperatures are slowly rising and birds are starting to sing.\u00a0 Winter is coming to an end.\u00a0 For Sinclair Community College students, that can only mean one thing: Finals.\u00a0 Luckily Sinclair has opportunities for students to get that extra study boost in before the end of the quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sinclair students have access to free study-friendly resources both online and on campus.\u00a0 Sinclair\u2019s Library is home to many study resources, including private study rooms.\u00a0 Reference Librarian Marlene Bundy said people usually use the rooms for group projects or study sessions with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were designed for groups, but we do let individuals use them,\u201d Bundy said.<\/p>\n<p>The Library keeps a waiting list for the rooms, but that doesn\u2019t seem to discourage students from using them, according to Bundy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe small rooms are very popular here,\u201d Bundy said.\u00a0 \u201cWe could use a lot more of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study rooms are not the only places to find peace or privacy in the Library, according to Bundy.\u00a0 She suggests students use study cubicles at the back of the Library or the Quiet Room, a no-talking-allowed communal study area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Study resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For on-campus students, the Tutoring and Learning Center can help students brush up on their grammar, writing, reading and basic math skills.\u00a0 According to the TLC\u2019s Web page, all current tutoring is done on a drop-in basis.\u00a0 The center also has math skills review packets posted online.<\/p>\n<p>Various study resources can be found on Sinclair\u2019s Web site.\u00a0 The site has links to study skills like combating test anxiety, research paper tips, study tools and other learning aids.\u00a0 There are also links to Tutorial Services as well as various essay styles, including Modern Language Association (MLA) and Chicago Manual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students Prepare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Criminal Justice major Jon Seitz was studying for his finals as early as Feb. 25.\u00a0 He said he was most concerned about the final for his Emergency Medical Technician\u2019s class, which is worth 10 credit hours.\u00a0 To prepare he studied his vocabulary, reading and labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI even bought a couple extra books to help me review,\u201d Seitz said.<\/p>\n<p>Kristine Baker, a Health Information Management student, is less concerned about her English final and more concerned with the time limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my final English essay I have to write an essay on the spot,\u201d Baker said.\u00a0 \u201cIt takes me a long time to write an essay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baker said she had to unlearn a lot of her high school essay writing to do well in the class, so to prepare for her final she is focusing on doing what her teacher tells her to do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The snow is melting, the temperatures are slowly rising and birds are starting to sing.\u00a0 Winter is coming to an end.\u00a0 For Sinclair Community College students, that can only mean one thing: Finals.\u00a0 Luckily Sinclair has opportunities for students to get that extra study boost in before the end of the quarter.
